In Memory of Peter Glover
Ironsides recently lost one of its more revered members - Peter Glover.
Peter joined London Welsh when he moved to London for his job with the Department of Social Security. His appearances for London Welsh were limited as he was behind a succession of talented backs including John Dawes.
Seeking more regular games he joined the Ironsides in 1959 just when the “original” Ironsides were coming to the end of their careers.
After one season he was persuaded (I think that is the right word knowing some of our original old boys) to become club captain. This was at a time when the club was struggling to maintain two regular teams. Through Peter’s endeavours, and those such as Bill Pearson along with a successful local advertising campaign, they yielded stalwarts such as George Dallimore, Frankie Poole and Tony Knight. This enabled the club to successfully field two regular teams throughout the early 1960’s.
Peter remained club captain for over a decade before stepping down. He continued to play for the club until the mid 1970’s.
He was also a keen member of the cricket section and played for the club until the mid/late 1980’s. A forceful middle order batsman and a consummate slow bowler, he was an asset to the 3rd XI during their successful years in the Slazenger League.
Much of the foundations on which the club rose to the prominence it enjoys today were put in place by Peter during his tenure as club secretary.
Enjoy your reunion with the other Ironsides in heaven.
Rest in Peace Peter.
