Ironsides Youth - Waterfall Cup Silverware!

Quite a week for our Youth teams in their Surrey Waterfall Cup Matches.

U14’s

On the back of one helluva Italian tour, B’s narrowly lost against Guildford A’s in the Cup final. They played with heart and determination and should be proud of how well they did.

The A’s landed their 3rd consecutive Waterfall win. 38-7 with only their first points against them this season from a penalty try. What an incredible bunch of boys.

In the coaches words ‘Thank you Ironsides and all those that have supported us from 1st team players to ex coaches who made it down to inject some old school energy. Besides the win and making it 3 waterfall cup wins in a row,  what is more remarkable from these boys is the only points they conceded in the whole campaign was a contentious penalty try in the final - no opposition player has crossed our try line all season in the Waterfall Cup - defence can win games’.

Managers and Coaches of the U15 squad, ‘wish to congratulate the U14 on a truly fantastic achievement.

Credit where credit is due, the management and coaching team deserve a huge amount of credit and congratulations.

It also goes without saying that the kids have consistently put in a phenomenal performances winning 3 on the bounce.

Sincere well done to all involved’.

U13’s

The A’s won their Waterfall group with a very close final against Hammersmith and Fulham.

Unfortunately, B’s had their game postponed due to the the wet conditions.

C’s came second on this outing but played with great spirit!

Comments from our roving reporter… ‘The A’s won a close match vs Hammersmith and Fulham 4-3. It was a very tense contest and at 3-3 with minutes to go we had to score to ensure we would lift the cup (a draw would have given the cup to Hammers, as they had scored the first try). It was apt that man of the match, Jack Duder, went crashing over in the final play of the match to give us a well deserved win. The spirit, heart and determination from the boys was phenomenal. Credit to Hammers for a terrific and very sporting game of rugby.

The B’s match was sadly postponed due to some of the pitches being unplayable due to the rain. We hope to rearrange that match for Bank Holiday Monday.

The C’s went down to a very strong Reigate B team in their final. Despite playing against a physically bigger team, the boys gave everything and played for each other with great spirit and tenacity.

There was a huge amount to be proud of in today’s matches and as a group of coaches we could not have asked for more from the boys. They played really well, exemplified TREDS and did each other and the club very proud indeed. 2, 3…’

U12’s

Our A team went down 1 nil in a battling performance in the “Oak” final v Park.

Pick of the day was the C team lads, beating Irish B 6-0 in their final, to take third place in their league above a number of A teams.

U15’s

Our B team put in a convincing performance on Sunday 21st April against Kingston playing some fantastic finals day rugby and coming out on top by 40-12.

The A team returned to the Stoop on Monday 22nd April to contest the Surrey Cup final for the third year in a row. After being crowned Surrey Champions at U13 they narrowly lost out to Esher last year and sadly they were to finish runners up again, this time to arch rivals Wimbledon.

Having shown amazing grit to come back from 10-5 down and lead 12-10 with only minutes left to go they conceded a penalty which Wimbledon kicked for goal with the last kick of the game.

Our boys were gracious in defeat as always and though heartbroken will return stronger in 2024/25 – when the cup will once again by coming back to Openview where it belongs!

This May bank holiday weekend showed what character and strength in depth they possess as a squad - with a mixed squad heading on tour to the West Country and securing good wins against Frome RFC and Wiltshire county finalists Marlborough.

Well done to everyone and so great to see Ironsides teams continuing to do so well.
